1954
The first steps of Guangzhou Auto
The story of Guangzhou Auto | GAC began with the Guangzhou Bus Repair Factory, where wooden and metal buses were built — marking the early beginnings of Guangzhou’s proud automotive heritage.
1960s-1970s
From public transport to passenger vehicles
During the 1960s and 1970s, GAC expanded beyond bus production, moving into truck manufacturing before introducing passenger cars in the early 1970s.
1985
Global partnership, global standards
The launch of the Guangzhou Peugeot joint venture was a defining moment for GAC, bringing international recognition to Guangzhou as production began on the Peugeot 504 and 505.
1990s-2000s
The modern GAC Group is formed
With design studios in Milan, a research and development centre in California, and collaborations with Honda, Toyota and Mitsubishi, GAC Group continued to establish itself as a globally recognised automotive manufacturer.
2017
AION is born
GAC New Energy was established to drive the group’s electric vehicle ambitions, with AION launched as its dedicated electrified vehicle brand. Soon after, GAC AION became an independent operation, focused on developing intelligent, high-quality electric vehicles built for the future.
2021
Scaling the new standard
AION became the fastest automotive brand in China to reach 1 million sales, marking a major milestone in its rapid growth. At the same time, AION continued to push electric vehicle innovation forward through advanced battery technology, ultra-fast charging capability and purpose-built smart EV factories.
2026 and beyond
Setting a new standard in the UK
Led by an experienced British leadership team and supported by trusted customer care, AION enters the UK market with confidence. With a dedicated UK-based parts hub and vehicles carefully adapted for British roads and everyday driving needs, AION is here to redefine what electric car ownership in the UK should feel like.
