Make the Switch to EV
Making the switch
All you need to know before buying an EV.
What does life after petrol look like?
As fuel prices continue to increase, the financial benefits of switching to an electric car are becoming harder to ignore. With fewer moving parts than a petrol or diesel vehicle, EVs can often be cheaper to maintain, while the latest battery technology has helped ease concerns around safety, driving range and everyday practicality. Frequently Asked Questions
Who is AION?
AION is GAC’s dedicated electrified brand, created to deliver smart, well‑equipped EVs built with clarity, confidence, and uncompromising quality.
Who owns AION?
AION operates under the Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC), having evolved from GAC’s new‑energy division into a dedicated electrified brand within the group.
In the UK, AION vehicles are distributed through a partnership with Jameel Motors, one of the world’s most established automotive distributors.
How do you say “AION”?
It’s pronounced “ay-on.”
Who designs and makes AION cars?
Designed and developed by GAC/AION specialists across China and Milan, every AION model is manufactured with precision at GAC’s advanced Smart Ecological Factory.
Is AION a Chinese car brand?
Yes, AION is GAC’s dedicated electrified brand, drawing on Guangzhou’s long‑established heritage in automotive engineering.
Is AION a new brand?
While AION is a fresh arrival in the UK, it’s a proven electric brand internationally. Established in 2017 as GAC Group’s electrified division, AION now stands as an independent marque backed by GAC’s long heritage in automotive innovation and large‑scale manufacturing capability.
Are AION cars reliable?
Yes, AION cars are built to high standards of performance reliability – our confidence is reflected in the 8-year full warranty* every car comes with. This reliability is also backed by AION being voted 1st in Quality for nine consecutive years and 1st in Customer Satisfaction for three consecutive years by car owners in China’s prestigious JD Power Awards.
AION batteries also come with their own 8-year warranty* and incorporate cutting edge intelligent cooling technology and built-in safety systems to perform better for longer.
What’s more, Smart Rescue reports that electric cars in general are 59% less likely to require breakdown assistance compared to cars with an engine.
How much does an AION electric car cost to run?
Running costs depend on electricity prices, charging habits and driving routines. But generally, electricity usually costs far less per mile than petrol or diesel – particularly if you can charge your car overnight on an off-peak smart tariff. What’s more, EVs often have lower service and maintenance costs.
Is it cheaper to run an EV than a petrol car?
Usually yes – electricity costs per mile are typically lower, and EVs have fewer moving parts so maintenance is often cheaper. Actual savings depend on mileage, driving patterns, electricity rates and fuel prices.
How much does it cost to drive 100 miles in an AION car in the UK?
That depends on efficiency and electricity price. The engineered aerodynamics and battery performance of AION’s cars make them extremely efficient. As for electricity, home charging is generally the cheapest option – so a simple method to work out your expected mileage cost is to multiply the car’s kWh per 100 miles by your electricity price per kWh.
How much will I save switching to an AION electric car?
Savings vary by how much you drive, electricity vs fuel costs, and servicing. Many owners see lower fuel and maintenance bills, but total savings depend on your circumstances.
Can you charge an EV with a standard home plug?
Yes, but it’s very slow and not recommended for regular use – a dedicated home charger (wallbox) is safer, faster and more efficient.
Can you have an EV charger without off-street parking?
Yes. Options include on-street lamppost chargers, public hubs, communal chargers for flats and workplace chargers. Lamppost and bollard charge points are becoming increasingly common across the UK as EV uptake increases, with more and more local authorities and energy suppliers investing in on-street charging solutions.
Do electric cars automatically stop charging when full?
Yes. Just like when you’re charging your phone, chargers and cars communicate to stop charging when the battery reaches the set charge level.
How do you charge an electric car at home?
You can charge an electric car using either a household plug or a professionally installed EV charger. A standard household plug will give you a slow charge, but it’s not ideal as a long-term solution. A dedicated EV charger (wallbox) is the best solution, installed inside a garage or on an external wall, close to where you usually park the car. Plug the cable into the car, select the charge settings on the car or your car’s app, and the car will charge automatically.
How fast can you charge an AION electric car at home?
With a dedicated home charger, you’ll typically get several times the power of a standard plug, allowing for much faster charging. Full charge times vary by car and charger, but a full 0% - 100% charge will usually take between 4 and 10 hours – ideal for overnight charging.
Is it safe to leave an AION charging overnight?
Yes, charging at home with a certified charger installed by a qualified electrician is safe. Cars and chargers have multiple safety systems to manage charging and stop it if anything goes wrong.
Can a normal electrician install an EV charger?
Only an EV charger qualified electrician should install your wallbox. You can search online for qualified EV charger specialists, or your EV dealership should be able to provide recommendations.
Do I need to rewire my house for an EV charger?
Your EV charger qualified electrician will assess your house’s fuseboard and cables. Some older homes may need an upgrade to support faster chargers or multiple devices but, in the vast majority of cases, no rewiring will be necessary.
Can I plug an AION EV into any outlet?
Technically yes for very slow charging, but it’s not recommended as an effective long-term solution. A dedicated wallbox or approved public chargers are far more preferable in terms of safety and speed.
How do you charge an electric car without a driveway?
More and more councils are investing in on-street lamppost chargers to accommodate those without access to off-street parking. There are grants local councils and building managers can get to fund overnight charge points for residents.
Can you run an EV charging cable across the pavement?
No, charging cables running from a property across a pavement present a trip hazard to pedestrians. Some councils allow temporary cable runs with protective covers and prior permission; always check local rules and use cable ramps where permitted.
How much does it cost to charge an AION?
It depends on where you’re charging. Multiply the kWh needed to top up the battery by the pence per kWh – whether that’s your home rate or one stated on a public charger. Overnight and off-peak tariffs can make home charging cheaper.
Are EV charging stations free in the UK?
Free charging can sometimes be found at supermarkets, leisure centres, hotels and tourist attractions for customers using their facilities, but it’s becoming increasingly rare. If you do find one, they’re likely to be the slower, standard charging speed with an output under 8kW.
Do you have to pay for parking when charging your electric car?
It depends on location. Some charging bays are free while you charge; others are subject to parking charges – check local signage or operator rules.
How much does it cost to charge an AION car at home?
Home charging is generally the cheapest option – so a simple method to work out your expected mileage cost is to multiply the car’s kWh per 100 miles by your electricity price per kWh.
Is charging an AION electric car at home cheaper than petrol?
Yes in most cases. Electricity cost per mile is generally lower than petrol, especially with off-peak home charging.
What is the cheapest way to charge an electric car?
Charging at home on a cheap or off-peak tariff is usually the least expensive. Plan charging for off-peak hours where possible.
